What is Integrative Wellness?

Integrative wellness is what healthcare patients have been asking for over the last 30 years and we are lucky to have integrative health in Davenport, Iowa.  Integrative wellness means the practitioner is bringing traditional medicine and complementary/alternative medicine together.  “Integrative health emphasizes a holistic, patient-focused approach to health care and wellness—often including mental, emotional, functional, spiritual, social, and community aspects—and treating the whole person rather than, for example, one organ system. (https://nccih.nih.gov/health/integrative-health).”  Ronda Johnson’s philosophy is to look for more holistic approach to wellness including nutrition, lifestyle choices, massage, essential oils and more.

Ronda Johnson, ARNP (Wellness in You, LLC) wants to bring healthcare in the Quad Cities back to what it used to be when practitioners spent more time getting to know their patients.  She typically spends around 90 minutes with new patients on their 1st wellness exams.  This gives her a chance to ask questions, look at your previous health history, and really get to know your health overall.  So many times, patients have seen multiple providers who each have run tests, but nobody is sitting down and looking at all the tests and paperwork together.  This is one of Ronda’s areas of specialty. She enjoys helping patients see the whole picture and takes the time to teach.

Functional Healthcare

Functional healthcare is a newer model of health that is patient-focused, science-based approach that looks at the root cause for disease, not just the symptoms. (https://www.ifm.org/functional-medicine/)  Functional health trained practitioners address the complexity of disease such as they may find one disease with many causes or many causes for one disease.  They take into account the patient’s environment, habits, lifestyle, and previous medical records apart from the apparent symptoms of disease.  Ronda works closely with the resources from the Institute of Functional Medicine, who have been groundbreaking in their advancements in the functional medicine field.

So how does Ronda Johnson, ARNP bring integrative and function health together?  Integrative healthcare and functional medicine have a lot of areas that overlap.  They both are patient-focused, and look at many factors in a patient’s life such as lifestyle, diet, stress levels, etc.…  The big difference is that functional health looks for the underlying root cause of disease.  Ronda uses her functional training to find the root of a person’s health issue, but she may apply a wider range of treatment based on her integrative health philosophy.  There is a time for nutrition and lifestyle changes and there is a time for prescriptions.

Natural Hormone Therapy – Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT for Men & Women)

Hormones control many of our body’s basic functions.  They help coordinate everything from digestion and growth to your appetite, immune function, mood, and libido. When your hormones are out of balance, even slightly, it can have a big impact on your health and well-being.  Bioidentical hormone therapy (BHRT) refers to the use of hormones, through supplementation or replacement to help patients attain their optimal hormone levels.  This is accomplished by using hormones that are molecularly identical to those produced in the human body and are naturally existing, not synthesized.  This is different from traditional hormone replacement therapy (HRT).  The hormones used in traditional HRT are synthetic and can come with more side effects. The BHRT prescriptions are compounded by specialized pharmacies to produce a dosage that is unique to the individual patient based on their lab work. At Wellness in You, we do not guess, we test.

If you are interested in Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy, you can schedule a New Patient Health Exam with Ronda.  She will work with you and your current healthcare team to provide specialized insight into a custom program unique to you.  Your hormones are more than your thyroid.  They are more than the stress hormone, cortisol, that can contribute to belly fat, insomnia, and other issues.  Your hormones are important in your overall health and may be influenced by stress and aging.

Digestive Health

Science and medicine have been coming together to get a bigger picture about our digestive system.  Your digestive tract is now being referred to as your second brain as more information about how it plays into your overall health is being understood (https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/gut-feelings-the-second-brain-in-our-gastrointestinal-systems-excerpt/).  If your digestive system is unhealthy it could contribute to many serious problems such as premature aging, chronic diseases, digestive disorders, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, and more.  There is an important balance between gut microbes and digestive enzymes that keeps your system healthy.

Did you know that there is a big difference between a food intolerance and a food allergy?  A food intolerance is your body’s inability to digest that food.  A food allergy is an immune response to a food.  Gastric disturbances may also be a contributing problem to other diseases if your body isn’t breaking down and absorbing your food properly.  Ronda Johnson, ARNP is highly trained in understanding, testing, diagnosing, and treating these digestive concerns.

Metabolic Code – Preventative Healthcare and Roadmap to Disease

How is a Metabolic Code Assessment a vital tool in your overall health?   The Metabolic Code looks at your health history with a highly specialized questionnaire that looks for minor symptoms that are often overlooked by patients and healthcare providers.   Ronda Johnson, ARNP uses the Metabolic Code program to break down your overall health into categories ranking what organ systems the most symptomatic in your overall wellness.  This is a great preventative wellness tool to look at several areas of your body and see from green (low risk) to red (high risk issue contributing towards potential disease) where each system ranks.  Ronda does a wonderful job sitting down and explaining each page of your report.

The Metabolic Code Assessment also gives you insight into what order to work with your body systems.  It acts like a map, giving you step by step directions toward body balance.  This can be a great tool if you have multiple health issues because it demonstrates the interrelatedness of the body systems in such a a way that your advanced nurse practitioner can recommend specific treatment to improve your overall health. This is unique to each client.  For example, the assessment may show that the system involving your digestion is a key factor of imbalance, and you have several other systems that also need attention.  Sometimes by treating the main imbalanced system (ie. Digestion), the other systems may also improve.  Metabolic Code Assessments can be applied to show benefits in chronic disease, stress, sleep, weight loss, fatigue, memory issues, inflammation, restless leg, high cholesterol, and joint pain. It was developed through a team of physicians, nutritionists, and clinical pharmacists researching patient records through Georgetown University.  Find out more about the Metabolic Code: click here.
