What is an Infrared Sauna?

An infrared sauna is a sauna that uses infrared light waves that penetrate the body and create internal heat.  Infrared light waves are part of our everyday environment.  When you stand outside and feel the warmth of the sun on your face, you are feeling infrared light produced by the sun.  Our bodies produce infrared naturally during cell healing.  Infrared technology has been used to keep babies warm in the NICU for decades and studied throughout the world since the 1950s.

The dry heat of infrared allows clients to breath easy since the light waves warm the body directly instead of heating the air around a person.  This means you can get the benefits of the sauna at lower temperatures (95-130 degrees F) and can even open the sauna door and receive benefit.

How can the Infrared Sauna help me?

Do you want to loose weight, deeply detox, have a stronger immune system, a stronger heart, better skin, and less pain?  These are all the benefits of  using an infrared sauna and more keep surfacing as medical research continues.  You can use the infrared sauna as part of your natural wellness plan.  Other times you may want to book an appointment if you are starting to come down with a cold, healing from a surgery or strained muscle, or if your diet hasn’t been very good and you want to a fresh start.

How long of a session should I book?20160701_172239_1467573549318_resized

Children and elderly should never book a session over 15 minutes and enjoy a reduced temperature of 100 degrees F until they see how their body responds.  If you have health issues or are concerned with how you will tolerate heat, a 15 minute session is also recommended as your starting point.  You get the infrared benefits in 15 minutes, so it is also great for a busy lifestyle or an add on to another service at Centered Therapies.

A 30 minute session with extend your infrared benefits and increase the level of detoxification you experience.  As well as, it provides cardiovascular health and soft tissue healing.  The longer session will also increase the number of calories your body burns.

With either session time, in the rare event that you experience pain or discomfort or just feel done, please end your session.  We start everyone at 110 degrees F and clients can increase the sauna temperature as their bodies adjust over time.

What can I expect during my first appointment?

Drink plenty of water before you come for your appointment.  Most people are going to sweat, so it is important to maintain hydration.

Our infrared sauna is in a private room.  It is made of aspen wood and glass, and will comfortably seat two people (for those who sign up for a 2-person session with a friend/family member)

We disinfect the sauna after every use and set out a clean towel on the wooden bench and floor for you to sit and stand on.  You will undress to your comfort and take a seat on the covered bench.  You will be sweating, so we recommend undressing or wearing undergarments or a swimsuit for your comfort.  Additional towels are provided to towel off sweat during and after your sauna use.

Now sit back and enjoy your relaxing session.  You can meditate, listen to music, read a book or just relax.  The sauna will set to around 130 degrees F and is a full spectrum infrared, which provides the greatest health benefits.  There is a skylight within the sauna that allows you to cool down.  Water is provided to keep you hydrated during and after your sauna session.

But, if you’re new to the sauna, you might find you don’t sweat at all the first few times, or even the first several times! That may sound strange, but some people have suppressed sweating mechanisms due to past pesticide exposure or other toxic exposures.  If that’s the case for you, take things slowly, realizing that you won’t be able to tolerate the sauna as long or get the same benefits without sweating. As you keep at it, the problem should correct itself and your ability to sweat will return.

We offer natural electrolyte replacement drink powder pack that contains no added sugar, no artificial flavors or colors, all 6 electrolytes, vegan, gluten-free, and caffeine-free for $1 at the front desk.  It is important to replace electrolytes after infrared sauna use.

What can I expect after an infrared sauna session?

Afterwards it is important to replace electrolytes and fluids by drinking plenty of water, and either drinking an electrolyte replacement beverage (available at front desk ($1)) or eating fruits and dark leafy greens.

Usually clients feel very relaxed after a session.  Their joints feel looser, more flexible and their pain has eased.  Toxins have been released through sweating and will wash away with your next shower.  Some people notice softer, smoother skin.

For a healthy individual, you can use an infrared sauna daily.  According to Mayo Clinic, “no adverse effects have been reported with infrared saunas.”

70% Less Pain AFTER JUST ONE SESSION! A recent study published in Internal Medicine, showed that patients with chronic pain saw their pain levels drop by nearly 70% after their first session of infrared sauna therapy. Pain scores remained low throughout the observation period. (Internal Medicine (Tokyo) Aug 15, 2008 by Matsushita K, Masuda A, Tei C. Boost Your Immunity: Infrared saunas are clinically shown to help patients with weak immune systems, such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections. MRSA is a potentially deadly bacterial infection that is resistant to most antibiotics. Infrared therapy knocked out the MRSA pathogens without causing increased inflammation.(Photochemistry and Photobiology, August 2009)

In an article in the Townsend Letter for Doctors and Patients, Lawrence Wilson, MD writes, “If I were to single out one method to combat cancer, it is the sauna. It assists removal of chemical toxins and heavy metals, increases oxygenation, enhances the immune system, and reduces the radiation burden in the body.”(Wilson, L. Saunas and Cancer, Townsend Letter for Doctors and Patients, June 2004)

Infrared treatment shrinks tumors 86% in 30 days: In a clinical study published in the Journal of Cancer Science and Therapy, scientists studied far infrared’s effects on human cancer cells in vitro and on cancer cells in mice. Far infrared therapy reduced tumor volumes 86% in 30 days. The tumor-suppressing effects were even seen without high temperatures, even as low as 77 degrees Fahrenheit. (read study)

Reduce your chance for heart disease.  A study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology showed that infrared saunas help improve the function of impaired vascular endothelial cells in patients who are at risk for coronary artery disease. The infrared heat of the sauna opens capillaries to improve blood flow. 15 minutes in an infrared sauna each day for 14 days improved the function of the endothelial cells lining the arteries by 40%.(Imamura, M, et al. Repeated thermal therapy improves impaired vascular endothelial function in patients with coronary risk factors. Journal of the American College of Cardiology. 2001, 38 (4): 1983-88.)

Infrared sauna use as creating a cure for or treating any disease is neither implied nor should be inferred.
